Welcome to the SHINE website!

SHINE is a voluntary project run by students at King's that aims to raise the academic achievements and aspirations of Key Stage 2 (9-11 year old) pupils in local inner-city primary schools.

Student mentors work on a one-to-one basis with children from schools in areas local to our main campuses at London Bridge and Waterloo. Mentors may be assigned to pupils who have been identified as requiring additional support, however at most schools, every child in the class will have a SHINE student mentor. Mentors spend 1-2 hours a week with their pupil, providing support in any area of study, in addition to emotional and behavioural support.

Since the project started three years ago, many achievements have been made leading to vast success in all of our participant schools. The project has found that children benefit significantly from having a mentor, which is often shown by their increased confidence, raised aspirations as well as improved behaviour and social skills. This is in addition to educational achievements.
